OrMin. youth join campaign against HIV and AIDS

Oriental Mindoro youth participated in a one-day activity for youth-awareness, supporting the prevention of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases. 

Biyaheng Kalusugan: World AIDS Day Celebration was organized  in observance of World AIDS Day at the Bulwagang Panlalawigan of the Provincial Capitol on 02 December.

Said event aimed to foster broader understanding on the risk factors of AIDS and HIV  among youth through health education.

With a theme, “Overcoming Disruptions, Transforming Lives: Umpisahan sa Pamilya ang Laban Kontra HIV”, said activity was led by the Provincial Health Office (PHO)  under the supervision of PHO II Dr. Cielo Angela A. Ante, in collaboration with the Department of Health (DOH) MIMAROPA CHD headed by Dr. Glendine Porteza through the Health Promotion Unit and Infectious Diseases Cluster, and the Provincial Department of Health Office (PDOHO).

Dr. Robert Leonard C. Goco discussed the potential health damages posed by said Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), dispelled myths regarding its transmission, and shared effective means of prevention to not be infected by these contagious diseases.

Governor Humerlito “Bonz” A. Dolor reminded the youth to be productive and proactive in life in order to avoid unsafe activities that can lead to the acquisition of STIs. 

He further stated that through the stronger coordination between government and private sectors, battling  HIV and AIDS is further strengthened. 

Gov. Bonz also led the ceremonial red ribbon-hanging activity, demonstrating support for this campaign. 

Purple Rain Clinic and Sustained Health Initiatives of the Philippines (SHIP) provided free HIV screening for participants.

Attendees of the event were students and teachers from Divine Word College of Calapan, City College of Calapan, Southwestern College of Maritime, Business and Technology Inc., Mindoro State University, Luna Goco Colleges, St. Anthony College of Calapan City Inc., Mina De Oro Institute, along with the Lingkod LGBTQIA+ Association of Calapan City, and the Department of Education – SDO Oriental Mindoro.

Eight groups of students from said institutions competed in the mural-painting contest. Winners will be announced on 9 December.
