More than 100 participants from 75 cooperatives in Oriental Mindoro participated in the Ulang Farming Training: Building Cooperative Capacity for Sustainable Aquaculture Enterprise at Vencio’s Garden, Calapan City on 6 October.
Led by the Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro through the Provincial Cooperative Development Office (PCDO), in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) MIMAROPA, the training aims to provide technical knowledge and practical skills to cooperative members in the province on the cultivation of giant freshwater prawns as an alternative livelihood.
Ulang is a type of crustacean similar to lobsters and crayfish that can be found on rivers in the country.
Fisheries Production & Support Services Division (FPSSD) Technical Staff Julius Rodriquez of BFAR MIMAROPA discussed essential knowledge on Shrimp Aquaculture Techniques, water quality management, disease prevention, harvesting and post-harvest management and product value addition strategies.
PCD Officer Orlando B. Tizon supervised the activity as part of the broader campaign of Governor Humerlito “Bonz” Dolor to strengthen cooperatives in the province by providing additional income and opportunities to the members.
The training is a testament to the PGOM’s continued efforts to promote inclusive development and a more stable livelihood for every Mindoreño.
